The Grand Canyon deserves its status as one of the natural wonders of the world, consistently recognised alongside Mount Everest and the Great Barrier Reef. It had been on my list of places to go since I learned in History that President Roosevelt, in 1908, designated it as a national monument, describing it as ‘beautiful and terrible and unearthly.’ 

Breaking up with someone who you love is never painless. To be quite honest, it’s one of the most emotionally charged and painful experiences that anyone can endure. But it’s not just the loss of a relationship, it’s the pain derived from losing an individual who held a central place in your heart. It’s about mourning the loss of someone you cared for and shared the most intimate parts of yourself. It’s like finishing a book that you never want to end, or returning home at the end of the best holiday of your entire life.

George Mallory’s famous retort when asked about his reasons for climbing Everest encapsulates the human spirit and symbolises an individual’s desire to conquer the unknown. But people climb for so many more reasons other than this, and his response doesn’t even scratch the surface of why we climb.
